Vintage Vogue beauty books

For many years, I've not just been a beauty addict, but a vintage lover too. Over the years, I've collected a few vintage Vogue books and wanted to share my two favourites with you.

Vogue used to produce regular books on fashion, health and beauty. I've found my little collection in charity shops for next to nothing and have never been able to resist bringing new ones home with me.

I find it fascinating to see what the trends were and the advice that were given to their readers, and to see how this has changed over the years.

The two books I'm sharing with you date from the late 1970's and mid 1980's (I'm sure you can guess which is which!).

Pampering 70s style

Each of them feature sections on diet, exercise, makeup, hairstyles, and even things like home made beauty treatments. What amazes me is that a lot of the advice in them is still totally relevant today. I know that 30 years might seem like a long time, but it appears that trends aside, we still have the same quest for beauty now as back then! Although we might give certain diets new names (Dukan, Atkins etc.) the advice in these books seems very similar too.

Facial exercises anyone?

I've take some pictures of different sections in the books to give you an idea of what they feature, but if you're interested in seeing more, just let me know. I've added a 1970s homemade face mask recipe down the bottom if you fancy a retro pamper!

They even feature illustrations from older editions - this one from the 1930s

And in case anyone would like to try a face mask from the 70s, the ingredients are:

Restoring mayonnaise facial masque
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup olive oil

Blend half a cup of the oil with the remaining ingredients and whip until thick and then pour in the remaining oil very slowly. Keep refrigerated. After applying to the face, allow 15 to 30 minutes before rinsing off.

What do you think? Fancy a mayonnaise mask?!

  6. Love the books! I remember putting mayonnaise on my face - it was red for about an hour afterwards. I'm pretty sure I put some in my hair too, after seeing Julia Roberts do it in 'Dying Young'.
